Foam Roller Uses
A foam roller is a simple piece of equipment that has many benefits and uses, read on to find out just what they are!
DIY deep tissue massage
By using a foam roller you can break up muscle tension and adhesions all over the body, they can also improve scar tissue and speed up the healing and recovery time of your muscles.
The iliotibial band, thighs, calves, back and chest can all receive a good massage from your sports foam roller in a cheap yet effective way.
Foam rollers use our natural response to pressure and the way it can help muscles relax. When you use the roller on tight spots or trigger points, this encourages muscle relaxation. Using the foam roller can be applied with a back and forth technique or simply applying constant pressure to a specific area.
A great way to test this theory is to try this technique and alleviate any tension in your neck. Start by lying on your back with the foam roller supporting your neck, this should add gentle pressure to the area. Then rotate your head from side to side or to one side and down to the shoulder; try this for 60 seconds and rest. Listen to your body and focus on the mind/muscle connection.
Add zest to your plank and push up
Planks and push-ups can become less taxing after our muscles get used to doing them, so for an extra stimulus for these two exercises you can use the foam roller to enhance them. By doing the exercises on an unstable surface, you can utilise more muscle tissue and make the work load harder.
Put both hands on the foam roller during a plank or push-up exercise OR place your feet on the foam roller to make your body utilise your core muscles to maximal tension. When you master this exercise, normal planks and push-ups will be a walk in the park.
Improve your balance
Balance boards and discs have a lot in common with foam rollers, rollers can be used to perform a high number of balance techniques, drills and exercises. The cylinder shape allows the roller to easily move within your range of motion just like a rolling lunge.
